I, Moviegoer.

Image
Daniel Craig? Not Bond, James BondBy Frank A HilarioHe’s Blond, James Blond. He’s a counter-spy, an impostor, a pretender, a double-agent. The fingerprints don’t match the real McCoy.You ask, rhetorically: ‘Who cares whether James Bond was black-haired or blond in Ian Fleming’s mind?’ I, Moviegoer mind. And I mind not only the color of the hair, the color of the cocktail – more so the color of the character. After the release of the latest Bond film by Sony Pictures, what did all those movie experts say? Their best. But their best isn’t good enough. They all miss the point. James Bond is a sharpshooter; ‘I never miss!’ he says. If he can only read the critics. On Casino Royale (the movie), I have scanned a hundred movie reviews, most of them are in praise of the new Bond – arising from:(a) a wrong assumption – Most assumed that it was all about revivifying a movie series, which is error in logic.(b) a forgotten rule of thumb – None said anything about satisfying the customer, which is …

Your side of the world

Your Side Of The World
Your Side Of The WorldCan you see your side of the world?Today, Wednesday, 22 November 2006, I’m starting to dig deeper into the lyrics of Steven Curtis Chapman, my Christian Music Superstar. And I’m starting with the song that is last in my alphabetical list of titles, which is this one, so when I’m done with the current list, you can read the whole thing top to bottom alphabetically. I have to start somewhere. Now we see through the glass, darkly. From the 'other' side of the world, 'your' side of the world. Apt image by b4k4 who captions it ‘Choose Your Side!’ (flickr.com/). That’s the usual way to behave: choose one thing or the other, Nikon or Canon or Leica or Olympus or whatever. Which is a proper way to behave – as long as you understand why you’re choosing, all things being equal. Now, all other things being equal, your choice is usually based on how much you can afford. In love, how much can you afford?‘So here we are standing face to fac…

The most powerful symbol

The Beauty Of The CrossDid the Cross have any lesson to teach me? I wondered today, 22 November 2006. Was there more than what I already knew, that the Roman Catholic Church has the most dramatic, most symbolic and most powerful symbol of faith of all religions or churches in the world: The Cross? Now I know better, as Henry E Dosker tells me in this excerpt (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, 2006, bible-history.com/):Cross. No word in human language has become more universally known than this word, and that because all of the history of the world since the death of Christ has been measured by the distance which separates events from it. The symbol and principal content of the Christian religion and of Christian civilization is found in this one word. How can many Christian churches of the world ignore the Cross? They ignore it at their own risk. (Apt image from Mortox, flickr.com/.)Religious or not, the Cross is found all over the world all over the place. The cross can be t…

Winpower!

Or, Pacquiao’s Sense Knocks Out Morales’ ScienceBy Frank A HilarioErik Morales’ Reason told him that Science belonged in the Top Rank if he wanted to win – and he did. Manny Pacquiao’s personal Faith told him that his uncommon Sense was the way to go if he wanted to win – and he did.Faith won over Reason on the 18th of November (19th, Manila time) at the Thomas & Mack Event Center at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, where Sense knocked out Science in the 3rd round of the WBC International Super-Featherweight title fight when Filipino Manny Pacquiao boxed Mexican Erik Morales out of history. Pacquiao gave Morales his ‘Grand Finale.’It was Pacquiao’s determination and tonight wasn’t my night. He’s very fast and he punches very hard, giving no quarter. The Filipino has a quick left hand and I couldn’t see a lot of them coming. I don’t know what was wrong but that wasn’t me out there. I am going to relax now and take some time with my family. I respect Manny Pacquiao. He’s the t…

The Gospel Of LIFE

Image
The Gospel Of LIFELife is what we make it. Roger Burke says (rogersreference.com/), ‘It's great to be the life and soul of the party, but is it not better to be party to the soul of life? (Life is what you make it, after all.)’L I F E. By the Gospel Of LIFE, I mean Living In Faith Everyday. After all, as St Paul said to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 5: 7), 'We walk by faith, not by sight.' Apt image from Askenni who captions it ‘ 'Celebrating Life!' (flickr.com/). If life is what we make it, then faith is not enough; we have to live our faith. That is the way we celebrate life. We can sing it some of the time, but we must always live it.The Gospel Of LIFE is dedicated to the music and message of Steven Curtis Chapman. He is one who makes his music, sings his songs and lives his faith. I hope to read if not sing all of his songs and tell you all about how the lyrics touch me and possibly you. Steven is an American Christian songmaker whose art imitates life, who co…

The true harvest.

Image
The True HarvestWe easily associate Henry David Thoreau with civil disobedience, which was made historically dramatic via Mahatma Gandhi’s widely and wildly successful Satyagraha – that is, Indian civil disobedience founded on non-violence – but we never associate Thoreau with creativity. Ann Woodlief writes (American Transcendentalism Web, 2002, vcu.edu/) that he was ‘a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, seeing little difference between them.’ Thoreau wrote of the ordinary in an extraordinary way. He discovered truths hidden in what everybody saw. That’s creativity!Creativity is something you do everyday not apart from you, except if you prefer to assume your critical self, which millions prefer to do. As in you say: ‘Filipinos? A hopeless case!’ and you know you’re a Filipino. Sir or madam, as the case may be, if you say that, you are a hopeless case that I’m not, and I’m a Filipino.Yesterday, I was asked to be a part of Task Force Rainbow i…

One, Two, Trinity

Image
One, Two, TrinityAnd then there were three. They were seen in Sacred Tradition first, seen in the teaching authority of the undivided Church next, seen in the Bible last. Which Church was that? The Roman Catholic Church. The Three Witnesses Of The Catholic ChurchTo the Protestants, the Bible is enough. Sola scriptura, the Scripture alone is the basis of what is good, what is pleasing, what is perfect (I’m borrowing from Romans 12). They are denying themselves what the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) refers to as ‘The splendor of truth.’ It’s a choice they have made with their Godfather, Martin Luther, starting on the Halloween of 1517 (October 31) when he nailed his 95 Theses on the church door at Wittenberg, accusing the Roman Catholic Church of ‘heresy upon heresy’ (2003, greatsite.com/). He was given a chance to recant, but he refused; he was excommunicated in 1521, or 4 years later. He was a brave man living up to his brave words. The protestor is always right. The Protestant…
