Why Leni Is My VP

Image
MANILA: The choice of Maria Leonor "Leni" Gerona Robredo as the candidate for Vice President 2016 of the Liberal Party (LP) is bad news, very bad news to the ladies who have been fighting for equal rights of men and women – and they don't realize it yet!Leni believes in marriage between a man and a woman under the Roman Catholic Church – and there are no equal rights there! (No, there are not even equal hugs.)Jesse and Leni's marriage lasted 25 years before the plane crash that took his life away. "(She) attributed their lasting relationship to mutual efforts to let nothing come between them and a strong desire to make the marriage work" (Jamaine Punzalan, 09 October 2015, abs-cbnnews.com). Leni does not believe in a woman's right to her body, but she certainly believes in her husband's right to her body, and her husband's wife's right to her husband's body within marriage under the Roman Catholic Church. I'll call it mutuality. Now …

PowerPoint: Blaming The Program, Not The Pro

Image
MANILA: Here comes Mr Andrew Smith of The Guardian complaining "How PowerPoint is killing critical thought" (23 September 2015, theguardian.com). If the above image is the basis, I'm not surprised: the audience must be bored to death! Yet, an app cannot kill a thinking person. If you're the one doing critical thinking only and you're not teaching your audience critical thinking, then whoever you are, you're average, ordinary. If you have used PowerPoint and not demanded that your audience challenge your presentation, you're just another uncritical user of PowerPoint. I have done a 30-minute lecture using only PowerPoint and only text, but I did not bore my listeners – while I was explaining, right on the screen I highlighted the keywords on each page and made them grow bigger and bigger second after second right before everyone's eyes – they became readable even at the back of the computer room. Can you do that in PowerPoint? I already did, 3 years ago…

On World Teacher's Day, Stop Teachers Teaching Critical Thinking!

Image
MANILA: Today, Monday, 05 October 2015, is being celebrated World Teachers' Day, with the slogan "Empowering teachers, building sustainable societies" (unesco.org).And that, folks, is starting the celebration on 2 wrong feet:Left foot: "Empowering teachers" is vague enough it doesn't mean anything. Right foot: Teachers have nothing to do with building sustainable societies!I should know. I am a certified teacher; I passed the very first Teachers Exam in 1964 with a grade of 80.6%, not bad for someone who did not review (there were no Civil Service reviewers then). I have been a student of sustainable development since probably 40 years ago when I began working as an information officer of the Forest Research Institute, an agency under the Department of Natural Resources. I'm not a forester, but already then I was a writer with an open mind, so I learned that you cannot abuse the forest and yet pursue sustainable development up and down the mountainsides…

Tribute To Remedios "Meding" Medina Reynoso

Image
MANILA: Bringing back the memories. I took this photograph with a Kodak CX6330 on 13 February 2005 at a resort in Calamba City during a Reynoso Reunion; left to right: Teddy, Rey, Louie, Ateng, Raffy, Boogie, Cora and Osmundo. The lady was 85.Remedios Medina was my mother in law; she was married to Gabriel Reynoso. She died yesterday at 1530 hours; I celebrate her life because I and my children happened to be involved in it. Without her, my children would not be; equally important, without her, my married life would have been cut short, and badly, at only 6 children. Her husband died years ago; their children were: (1)Elisa (Tita Ateng), 1941(2)Corazon (Cora), 1943(3)Amparo (Ampy), 1945(4)Osmundo (), 1947(5)Rebecca (Becks), 1950(6)Juanita (Nits, ), 1952(7)Manuel (Boogie), 1954(8)Teodoro (Teddy), 1955(9)Rafael (Raffy), 1956(10)Luis (Louie), 1957(11)Reynaldo (Rey), 1958(12)

Creative Thinking Yes, But Creative Catholicism?

Image
MANILA: It is the 1st of October 2015, about 5 early in the morning. A cloud bursts, the rains fall, after a dry week, and I just know today is My Amazing Day of Grace. I thank God for it. Creativity is a gift I should keep on giving. In the image, I have just taken a selfie, a reflection off my Lenovo G470 touchscreen i7 laptop at the top of my computer desktop, a mirror of myself (to work, I'm using a 22-inch external ViewSonic monitor, just below this setup). That's Frank A Hilario with his Lumix FZ100 camera taking stock of himself early this morning, the laptop screen switched off by software being a mirror. In the background you can read the mirror view of DEFEND LIFE, a poster of the Knights of Columbus during that Walk for Life in San Pablo City on 16 March 2013 with the motto "We Choose Life" (I am a KofC of Laguna). Yes, I am against abortion and other forms of chemical or physical obstruction to pregnancy. Yes, I have 13 children with 1 wife.In the past 3 w…
